I never personally enjoyed Sandman. Just wasn't my thing and I can't stand Gaiman. I like the Grant Morrison stuff, mostly. I loved Kill Your Boyfriend. Easily my fave one-shot. Mobfire was a really good mini. I never got into the Invisibles, 100 Bullets or Preacher, or any of the other long running titles really. I liked the Doom Patrol back in the day. Sandman Mystery Theatre was cool too. The Mystery Play was a great one shot, slick graphic novel. I think there was one called Heart of the Beast that was great too, a Frankenstein story.
I really think that the power of Vertigo was in their minis and one-shots. Paradox Press was great when they were doing the 3 part stories in tabloid format, like Green Candles, and some of the other stuff, like Stuck Rubber Baby and the Big Books, were great too. Too bad they folded too.

I really like the Sandman series and some of Gaiman's other stuff, but Grant Morrison kicks his ass around the block, hands down, baby. Did you read his Animal Man? Brilliant stuff!

And you have to read the Invisibles - you don't really know Morrison if you haven't.

I totally had to reread that, because I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that they don't like Gaiman. I actually do, though I'm not saying there's anything wrong with not liking him, because I'm not an overzealous fan. I just had to point out that I'd never heard anyone say they didn't like him.

On another note, some of my more recent faves...The Filth, and Y The Last Man. I'm also very excited about the new Bite Club series. Just thought I'd mention some more recent stuff.

I can say I like Sandman but mostly because it is the springboard for the Lucifer series which I really think is the better of the two series.

My fave character is Mazakeen, she is just so amazing, focused, loving but keeps her self respect which is no easy task when you love a narcissist. She has got every trait I'd want in someone I'd date and it was definately a turn on watching the kinky scene with her being under the mind control of Cestis (Jin en Mok) of the dancing flesh in that cute one peice black dress.

She's everyhting you've ever wanted in a woman, huh? Does that include having half her face missing? ;)

I liked the Doll's House storyline. It had a surprising ending and set up Desire as an evil bitch/bastard/whatever.

I'm starting to wonder if the Desire is really as bad or evil as he/she seems to be.

What's interesting, is if you go back to the very beginning of the story line between the endless, in "Endless Nights" Desire and destruction seemed to get along very well in the story for "Dream".

Nothing was ever said in any of the books to explain why desire should have come to hate destruction later.

        Why?

Well, lets think about who destruction really is. He is more than merely the mechanical operation of destroying things, he is change... in some sense he is time.

Desire in a world where things don't change, wouldn't be cruel, it's in change that desire becomes something cruel. Perhaps desire knows this, doesn't want to be cruel but must, because change exists and destroys.

No one in love ever wants to beleive anything is going to change when they are in love, and when things do change, they do grieve and even decide they hate love and blame desire for it. Perhaps desire resents being to blame for what is essentually not his/her fault.

Perhaps she fears that she is too like her twin, and when destruction meets desire, often the outcome is despair.

She has her whole face now. She got cursed. Was actually really sad when she got a whole face, because she felt ugly with it.

Maz is great, but Elaine is the true heart of that story. I think Lucifer has been getting a bit sketchy lately. I think it's a prime example of a storyline growing bigger than the actual work. Started off being much better than Sandman, but now it's tapering.

All through the series I thought Cain and Able were briliant. The asides from the main plot and the extra pieces of lore that were given through them were always fun. Not to mention the great times had by watching Cain kill his brother over and over.

did you ever read the one shot where Cain goes on trial for murdering Able? It's really funny, and Merv gets to be a lawyer.

I know this is kind of off topic, but has anyone else had a chance to read "The Sandman Presents: The Furies?" I, myself, enjoyed it not only because of the rich illustration style, but because it cleared up everything with Hippolyta. She finally ended up in a somewhat peaceful place, which is saying a lot for her.

One of my friends got it for me Christmas before last. I think he got it at Border's, so you should be able to find it anywhere. It was illustrated by John Bolton, the same guy who was responsible for "Harlequin Valentine," and it's done in that same oil painted style; so if you're a fan of that, I definitely recommend it on that merit alone. Mike Carey wrote the story, and he's responsible for some of the fabulous writing on both "Hellblazer" and "Lucifer."

I enjoyed the "Dreaming" and offshoot of Snadman. Never really followed "Lucifer", but a couple of issues I snagged were good. I still think by far my favorite Vertigos are the Ennis Hellblazer runs and Preacher.

I loved Lucifer and The Preacher also, but when it comes to my Sandman, Im kind of a purist. I needs to be written by Gaiman and there must be a Dave McKean element. Ive read off shoots, spinoffs, etc, and theyre good, but theyre not GREAT.IMHO.

And yes, Im a rabid, frothing neil gaiman fan. I was not ever into comics of any sort until I read him, and allthough Ive branched out ( especially where LOBO and THE MAXX are concerned) I am really only into comix for gaiman/mckean/kieth and of course, my newest pet,Johnen Vasquez.
